The needs of the Island

Former PLP Minister Zane DeSilva is in the hot seat due to the transfer of the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) office to a building that he and his family own at a cost of almost $800,000 a year. Real estate experts are saying that the very high rental fees make the relocation of the concerned government department not a value for money. The DCFS was previously based at Milner House on Victoria Street, Hamilton at a cost of less than $300,000 a year. The huge difference in the rental fees is being questioned by the public but Mr. DeSilva has given no response to the press. Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch supported the transfer of the Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS). Colonel Burch claimed that the goal of the move was to “consolidate” the department under one roof to ensure the safeguarding of Bermuda’s children. Colonel Burch also stressed that the current office provides adequate space for the entire department and a modern technological interface, thus making the relocation an advantageous decision.
